Description of indicator

The indicator shows total consumption of alcoholic beverages calculated per capita as pure alcohol. Total consumption of alcoholic beverages comprises documented and undocumented consumption of alcoholic beverages. Documented consumption of alcoholic beverages comprises sales by Alko retail outlets and deliveries by wholesalers of alcoholic beverages to grocery shops, kiosks and service stations, and restaurants licensed to serve alcohol, as pure alcohol.

Undocumented consumption of alcoholic beverages comprises the legal and illegal manufacture of alcoholic beverages at home, alcohol imported by tourists, smuggling and substitutes, and alcohol consumed by Finns outside the borders of Finland, from which alcohol bought and consumed by foreigners in Finland deducted. Undocumented consumption of alcoholic beverages is estimated annually for the whole country. Undocumented consumption accounts for approximately one fifth of total consumption of alcoholic beverages.
